KABUL, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- Afghan authorities
seized about 16 tons of drugs in the past 10 days across the country, local
media quoted the country's top anti-narcotics official as saying on Saturday.
Deputy Interior Minister Mohammed Daoud Daoud said
the seizures included one ton of heroin, seven tons of opium and eight tons of
marijuana.
The authorities have arrested more than a dozen men
involved in drug smuggling, he said, adding a campaign is under way to convince
farmers not to grow the lucrative crop.
Afghanistan will produce 6,100 tons of opium this
year, witnessing a sharp rise of 49 percent from last year, according to a
report by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime in September. This amount accounts
for 92 percent of the world's total supply.
