BEIRUT, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Turkish peacekeepers arrived in Beirut on Friday to join an enlarged UN force in south Lebanon, the ANB television reported.
Some 95 soldiers and civilian engineers arrived in Beirut's harbor on two military ships, with 46 trucks, four armored personnel carriers and several bulldozers and other machinery onboard, the report said.
The Turkish contingent, which includes 237 soldiers and 24 civilians, will stay at a small village, 7.5 km southeast of the port city of Tyre in south Lebanon.
Turkey is the first Muslim country to contribute troops to the beefed-up UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The 34-day-long Israel-Hezbollah conflict came to an end on Aug.14 under UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which authorizes the expansion of the UN force in Lebanon to 15,000 troops to help the Lebanese government take control of its southern territory.
