Special Report: Ceasefire over in Sri
Lanka
COLOMBO, Oct. 17 (Xinhua) -- The Sri Lankan military
said that the Air Force conducted air raids on identified Tamil Tiger targets on
Tuesday with the rebel saying one of its radio facilities was destroyed by the
bombing.
The Air Force said it raided two Tiger bases in
Mullaitivu and an identified camp in Mankulam in the north on Tuesday morning.
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) said in a
statement "Sri Lankan Kfir bombers destroyed a transmission tower of the Voice
of Tigers radio broadcast located in Kokkavil in the Mullaitiviu district on
Tuesday."
The Air Force resumed its air strikes against the
rebel positions after Monday's suicide attack on the Navy in the North Central
Province by the LTTE.
The government said 99 sailors were killed while over
100 others were injured in what was described as a brutal terrorist attack.
The violence took place in spite of an agreement by
the government to meet face to face with the Tigers in Switzerland on Oct. 28
and 29.
The rebels are to make their final decision on
attending the talks to the Norwegian special peace envoy Jon Hanssen-Bauer on
Thursday.
The Norwegian envoy is set to return to the island
late on Tuesday following the arrival on Saturday of the Japanese special envoy
Yasushi Akashi.
The international community has been urging the two
warring parties to end violence and return to the process of negotiations.
