AARHUS, Denmark, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- World all-around champion Chellsie
Memmel aims to win two titles out of team and all-around at the Aarhus
gymnastics worlds, said the energetic and versatile gymnast here on Monday.
Memmel, the 2005 Melbourne all-around world champion, competed in all four
apparatuses to drive the U.S. to the top in the team rankings after the
first-day's qualifiers. She also booked the first place with 63.450 points in
all-around to gear up for the defending spurt.
"I hope I can win two titles here. The first of course is the team's and
then I will try to win the all-around as what I did last year," said Memmel
after the qualifiers.
"My main focus was the team tonight. After Wednesday I can think about
myself. We came in prepared and wanted to be one of the top teams,"
"In my routine, I did not connect everything the way I would have liked to,
but I will try to catch that up in tomorrow's training," added she.
"What I need to do next is to improve my landing and connections between
the bars."
Memmel is very prolific in the age of 18. She won three gold medals
(all-around, uneven bars and balance beam) at the Pan American Championships, as
well as led the U.S. women's team to the team gold medal and a berth to the 2007
Pan American Games in October, 2005. Then Memmel was named to the U.S. world
championship team and went on to win the gold medal at the world championships
in Melbourne one month later in the all-around, becoming the first U.S. woman
since 1994 to win the world all-around title. Memmel also won silver in the
uneven bars and in the balance beam.
In February 2006, Memmel was a finalist for the Sullivan Award, and in
March she was one of the three nominees for the International Gymnastics Hall of
Fame, Gymnast of the Year.
In April, Memmel tied for first in the all-around at the Pacific Alliance
Championships, won the title for the balance team, finished second in the floor
exercise and helped the U.S. win the team competition. Enditem
