intelligence said on Monday that air samples gathered last week contain
radioactive materials that confirm the Democratic People's Republic of Korea
(DPRK) conducted an underground nuclear explosion.
In a short statement, U.S. National Intelligence
Director John Negroponte's office also confirmed that the size of the explosion
was less than one kiloton, a comparatively small nuclear explosion.
Each kiloton is equal to the force produced by 1,000
tons of TNT.
"Analysis of air samples collected on October 11,
2006, detected radioactive debris which confirms that North Korea conducted an
underground nuclear explosion in the vicinity of P'unggye on October 9, 2006,"
the statement said.
The DPRK announced on Oct. 9 night that it had
successfully setoff its first nuclear test. However, U.S. intelligence officials
have voiced doubt over the claimed nuclear test as the seismic readings were shy
of a typical nuclear detonation. Enditem
