U.S. naval officer arrested in Japan over alleged attack

    TOKYO, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- A U.S. naval officer was arrested Saturday in Nagasaki prefecture of southern Japan over suspicion of attacking a Japanese woman, Kyodo News reported.

    Matthew Richard Hahn, 25, is a petty officer second class stationed at the U.S. naval base in Sasebo, Nagasaki. He admitted to having stabbed the 25-year-old woman with a knife early Saturday, the police said.

    The injuries of the victim were not fatal, according to police, who said that Hahn fled from the scene. The motive of the crime was not clear.

    Commander of U.S. Naval Forces Japan, Rear Adm. James Kelly apologized for the incident on Saturday to Sasebo Mayor Akira Mitsutake, the report said. Enditem
