Special report: Tension escalates in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi police found 25 unidentified bodies in different parts of Baghdad during the past 24 hours, a police source said on Saturday.

"Our patrols found 25 bodies during the past 24 hours in several Baghdad's neighborhoods," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

The bullet-ridden bodies were blindfolded and bound, showing signs of torture, he said.

The almost daily gruesome body findings, assassinations and explosions in Baghdad and other Iraqi cities were seen as a major setback for the Iraqi government's efforts to stem violence and achieve national reconciliation.

UN and Iraqi officials estimate that more than 100 Iraqis are killed everyday in insurgent attacks and fighting between Sunni and Shiite factions. Enditem
