said it would continue its insistence that the next UN secretary-general should
come form Asia.
"It is a common desire of Asian nations
and has been widely supported by the international community that next UN

South Korean FM retains lead in UN
leader race
UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 28
(Xinhua) -- South Korean Foreign Minister Ban Ki-Moon retained his lead in an
informal Security Council poll for UN Secretary-General on Thursday but received
one less vote than on the previous ballot, diplomats said.
Ban received 13 votes in
favor, one against and one of no opinion. That put Ban comfortably ahead of
Shashi Tharoor, the Indian UN undersecretary-general for public information, who

UN council set to hold third secret
voting on next UN chief
UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security
Council was to hold its third straw poll on Thursday among the seven declared
candidates vying to succeed Secretary-General Kofi Annan whose terms ends at the
end of the year.
The informal preliminary vote, scheduled to be held
at 4 p.m. EDT (2000 GMT), will for the first time include Latvian President
Vaira Vike-Freiberga and former Afghan finance minister Ashraf Ghani who had

Asian
BEIJING, July 6 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday said it
wants the next UN Secretary-General to be Asian.
"China firmly believes that next UN Secretary-General
should come from Asia and Asian countries will keep solidarity and coordinate
the selection of a competent, prestigious Secretary-General, who is widely
accepted by Asian countries," China's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told
