Special report: Internal situation in Palestine

GAZA, Oct. 6 (Xinhua)-- Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haneya told a rally here on Friday that his Hamas movement would not be pushed out of power or soften its positions towards Israel and recognize the Jewish state.

Addressing a crowed of his supporters, Haneya, also a senior leader of Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), said that "We say we will be in every government,... we will stay in the government."

Tens of thousands of Palestinians rallied in a sports stadium in the Gaza Strip Friday to show their supports for the embattled Hamas-led government.

The protestors, wearing green baseball hats and waving green Hamas banners, gathered in the crowded stadium in support of the six-month-old Hamas cabinet which took office in late March.

At the rally, Haneya urged Abbas to return to Gaza and resume the coalition talks, but he reiterated that his Hamas movement would never soften its stance towards Israel and bring itself to recognize the "legitimacy of the occupation."

"We will not recognize Israel," Haneya said.

Haneya ruled out various compromise proposals, such as a technocrat government or early elections, calling them tricks to get Hamas out of power, and reiterated that Hamas would always be in the government.

Last month, moderate President Mahmoud Abbas and Haneya reached an agreement to form a coalition government based on the Prisoners' Document of National Accordance, which calls for establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel.

The move was seen as an effort to get the Palestinian territory out of an economic and political crisis triggered by the West and Israel's cutting off of direct aid due to the ruling Hamas' refusal to meet the conditions of recognizing Israel, renouncing violence and respecting previous agreements signed with Israel.

However, the talks lapsed into a stalemate after Hamas refused to recognize Israel. Enditem
