SHANGHAI,
Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- Shanghai Zoo is banning the exploitation of animals for
commercial performances, local media reported on Saturday.
"We should change our thinking from the use of
animals for commercial purpose to their real protection," Xiong Chengpei, head
of the zoo, was quoted as saying by the Oriental Morning Post.
The zoo would hold educational science exhibitions
instead of staging recreational "stunt shows" with animals, he said.
The sea lion show would continue, but would focus on
science education.
"The zoo will depend mainly on ticket sales for
revenue after the commercial activities cease," he said.
The 50-year-old Shanghai Zoo has seen a steady growth
of 50,000 to 70,000 visitors a year, he said.
Last year, the number of visitors reached 1.7
million. Enditem
