Rice to visit Asia on DPRK nuclear issue

WASHINGTON, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will visit Asia soon to push for the resumption of the stalled six-party talks, U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said Wednesday.

"We have had conversations with the South Korean side about that. We are also having conversations with other partners in the six-party talks. I would expect at some point Secretary Rice will probably travel out to the region to try to make a push in that regard," McCormack said at a briefing.

"We are going to be talking to the other members of the six-party talks about what we can (do) to move the process forward, what can we do to convince North Korea to get back to the table," he said.

McCormack said that the United States encourages the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to return to the six-party talks and "engage in a constructive manner."

During the last round of six-party talks in Beijing in September last year, the DPRK agreed to dismantle its nuclear program in return for security guarantees and energy aids.

However, the DPRK has said it will not return to the talks if the United States does not lift the sanctions imposed on the country last year. Enditem
