BEIRUT, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese Defense
Minister Elias Murr urged Sunday that the Lebanese army needs modern arms and
installations to enable soldiers to defend the south against attacks by the
Israeli "enemy".
Murr made the call while talking with reporters after
talks with his Belgian counterpart Andre Flahaut.
"When the Israeli army withdraws, and the Lebanese
army replaces it, any Israeli violation of the UN-drawn Blue Line would be dealt
with by the army with adequate weapons," Murr told the reporters.
The Lebanese army needs anti-aircraft missiles "to
defend the Lebanese airspace against Israeli violations" besides anti-tank
missiles and chopper personnel transport aircraft capable of moving special army
forces to areas where they are needed, he explained.
For his part, Flahout said his meeting with Murr
focused on Belgian aid that could be dispatched to Lebanon's army and the
country's participation of the United Nations peacekeeping force in south
Lebanon, UNIFIL.
Belgian troops would work on clearing mines and
reconstructing infrastructure and destroyed roads, he said, adding "sending our
troops is also aimed at promoting the Lebanese-Belgian relationship."
