SHIJIAZHUANG, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Two people have been killed and two others injured in a mine landslide in Laiyuan, a county in north China's Hebei Province.

The landslide took place around 11 a.m. on Friday at an iron ore mine belonging to Laiyuan Iron and Steel Plant. Three excavators were buried by falling stones and earth, said an official with the general office of Laiyuan County Government.

The official was unable to confirm whether the victims were operating the excavator machines.

An investigation is underway to determine exactly how many workers were present when the landslide occurred and the cause of the accident.

Reports indicate the iron ore mine was formerly a state-owned enterprise but is now in the midst of bankruptcy proceedings. Apparently it did not have a work safety permit.

Laiyuan, which is administered by Baoding City, is about 244 km south of Beijing. Enditem
