Special report: Tension escalates in Iraq

    BAGHDAD, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- A U.S. soldier died of wounds sustained due to "enemy action" while conducting military operation in the volatile Anbar province, the U.S. military said on Friday.

    The soldier, assigned to 1st Armored Division, died on Sept. 21 in Anbar province, the military said in a brief statement.

    The name of the soldier is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, it added.

    Since the U.S.-led war in Iraq broke out in March 2003, about 2,685 U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq, according to media count. Enditem
