Special report: Israel launches Gaza assault

GAZA, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- One Palestinian militant was killed and another injured on Wednesday as an Israeli aircraft fired one missile at a group of militants in northern Gaza Strip, medics and security sources said.

An Israeli reconnaissance drone fired a missile at the militants, who were standing close to a homemade rocket launcher northeast of the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Hanoun.

One militant was killed and another moderately injured, witnesses said, adding the two were taken to a nearby hospital.

An Israeli army spokesman told Israel Radio that one aircraft fired one missile at a group of Palestinian militants who were trying to launch homemade rockets at communities in southern Israel.

Earlier in the day, Palestinian militants fired three homemade rockets from Gaza at Israel, while an Israeli army ground force thrust into northern and eastern Gaza Strip, Palestinian security sources said.

Abu Hamza, spokesman of the Islamic Jihad (Holy War) armed wing, claimed responsibility for the rocket attack.

The Islamic Jihad is the only Palestinian faction that continues attacks against Israel as other factions unofficially refrained from attacks in the wake of a coalition government deal reached between President Mahmoud Abbas and the ruling Hamas movement. Enditem
