BEIJING, Sept. 19 -- Former England football captain David Beckham has revealed that on reaching the US after being axed from the English side last month, he had called up his friend and Hollywood star Tom Cruise to seek advice on how to deal with the distress and get over his despair. He described Tom as a positive minded person.

"When I got to America, I phoned Tom. He's a great guy to be able to speak to because he is a very positive-minded person. It is good to have people like him around you at that point,” The Mirror quoted Beckham as saying in an interview.

He added:"Tom talked about everything I had done in the World Cup, about the goal I scored and the goals I set up. He said I was a great player.

"I played for Real Madrid, I've got a healthy family and three boys and a wife who love me to bits. It does you good just to hear somebody saying that sometimes. He's a great example of someone who stays positive through everything. And, that's how I started to get over what had happened with the England news. I got over it that way, with friends around me."

Becks and "Mission Impossible" hero have been friends, and once the latter had traveled all the way to Spain to watch the former England skipper play for Real Madrid. Tom himself had his own brush with adversity recently after movie giants Paramount dumped him.

Following his sacking orders, critics labeled Beckham's bid to regain his place in the England team as mission impossible, but after turning to Tom Cruise for advice he is determined to prove them all wrong, reported the paper.

BEIJING, Sept. 18 -- Former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham has lashed out at critics of Tom Cruise - insisting he is "genuine" and "lovely".

The singer and her soccer star husband David Beckham are both close pals of Cruise and wife Katie Holmes and insist criticism of their scientology beliefs and their parentage of baby Suri is unfair.

"People say he's strange or whatever but he's not, he's just a genuinely lovely, caring person," she said.

"And Katie? She's one of the most down-to-earth celebrities I've ever met. I couldn't imagine a better person for Tom.

"I haven't seen (Cruise's daughter) Suri in the flesh yet, just in pictures and she looks so beautiful, the spitting image of her dad.

"Tom calls me all the time and he's so in love with that little girl, he'll phone just to talk about her."
