Special report: Israel-Lebanon conflicts

Israel, Lebanon agree on ceasefire

BEIRUT, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- A Lebanese man and his wife were injured on Monday when a cluster bomb left by Israeli forces in the recent conflict exploded in southern Lebanon, a Lebanese security source said.

The couple, Redhwan Ghandour and his wife Fatin Ali Ahamed, have been sent to hospital for treatment, the source said.

Israel dropped around 1,800 cluster bombs on Lebanon in its 34-day assault, a Israeli daily quoted an Israeli army officer assaying on last Wednesday.

Large numbers of artillery shells, bombs and cluster bombs fired by Israeli army litter fields, houses and streets in southern Lebanon in unexploded condition.

The unexploded cluster bombs, which were estimated by the United Nations to be around 40 percent of those fired by the IDF in Lebanon, remain on the ground as dangerous munitions. Up to date, at least 13 people have been killed and dozens injured by such unexploded bombs.

Cluster bombs are prohibited by the United Nations for the massive casualties it caused.

During the conflict in Lebanon, UN humanitarian officials has accused Israel of dropping large numbers of cluster bombs on Lebanon when a cease-fire with Hezbollah was in sight. However, IDF has stated that all the weapons it uses "are legal under international law and their use conforms with international standards." Enditem
