RAMALLAH, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- A spokesman for
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said on Saturday there were no contacts to
arrange a summit meeting between Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.
"We are ready to meet immediately but with good
preparations," Nabil Abu Rudaina told reporters. "But so far, there is no news
in this regard," he added.
Both Abbas and Olmert announced they are willing to
set in talks without preconditions. Their remarks were made after the pair met
separately with British Prime Minister Tony Blair who visited the region last
week.
Abbas and Olmert held their last meeting in Amman in
June, just three days before Palestinian militant groups captured an Israeli
soldier in Gaza Strip. Since then, Israel unleashed a wide military operation,
especially in Gaza where more than 225 Palestinians were killed in the renewed
violence.
After signaling his willingness to meet Olmert, Abbas
has involved in talks with governing Hamas that eventually led to an agreement
on forming a Palestinian coalition government to replace the Hamas-led one.
However, Abbas is expected to ask current Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haneya to
lead the upcoming government.
This new development is likely to put an obstacle on
the way towards the designated Abbas-Olmert meeting. Israeli Foreign Minister
Tzipi Livni has warned the awaited summit talks might fail. Enditem
