WASHINGTON, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael
Chertoff pushed on Friday for legislations to impose tough safety measures on
the country's seaports and chemical plants.
In a speech on post-9/11 homeland security at Georgetown University,
Chertoff urged the Congress to approve the laws, saying that would be "a fitting
tribute to the fifth anniversary" of 9/11.
Once the legislations pass the Congress, they will be implemented promptly
and will "raise security for Americans all over this country," he said.
The congress will vote on the seaport security law by the end of the month
while plans to let the Homeland Security Department regulate safety of the
chemical industry are stalled.
Chertoff also used the speech to rebuke critics who said enhanced homeland
security measures are either too costly or too inconvenient, saying the
criticism "runs directly contrary to the lessons of 9/11." Enditem
