NEW YORK, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- New Yorkers get a glimpse of how Lower
Manhattan Looks like in 2012 as the designs for three new buildings at the World
Trade Center site were unveiled Thursday.
Governor George Pataki joined architects and developer Larry Silverstein
Thursday to unveil designs for World Trade Center buildings No. 2 through No. 4.
The trio of towers are slated for the eastern portion of the WTC site and next
to the 1,776-foot Freedom Tower. They will be part of a transit hub and face the
memorial for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The towers have wider floors for financial trading and plans for shops that
would replace the former mall at the trade center. The new towers would return
more than 6 million of the 10 million square feet destroyed on Sept.11.
Construction is to begin in 2007or 2008 and expected to be finished by 2012.
The largest of the planned buildings is a 78-story tower with a roof sliced
into four diamond shapes and pointing lights toward the former twin towers.
Another 71-story tower with crisscrossing beams up and down the sides, a
180-foot-tall lobby and five trading floors.
A 61-story tower would be the first to be built. It would have a restaurant
and bar with panoramic views of the memorial.
The Freedom Tower, the memorial and a permanent transit hub are currently
under construction.
Last December, Silverstein commissioned Lord Norman
Foster of England to design Tower 2. In April, he commissioned designs from two
more architects. Lord Richard Rogers, also of England, designed Tower 3. Tower 4
was designed by Fumihiko Maki of Japan. Representatives from all three design
teams collaborated on the project. Enditem
