CAIRO, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Arab foreign ministers
Wednesday called on the UN Security Council to put in place a developed
mechanism and revive the stalled Middle East peace process.
The senior diplomats made the call at the Cairo-based
Arab League (AL) headquarters at an ordinary meeting, which was attended by a
total of 19 Arab foreign ministers and AL Secretary General Amr Moussa.
Bahraini Foreign Minister Sheikh Khaled bin Ahmed
al-Khalifa, who chaired the AL ministerial council session, said the mechanism
should be based on relevant UN Security Council resolutions, the land-for-peace
principle and the Arab Peace Initiative adopted at the 2002 Beirut Summit.
The Arab Peace Initiative called on Israel to
withdraw to the 1967 borders and the creation of an independent Palestinian
statehood alongside Israel, which has rejected the Initiative from the very
beginning.
The Bahraini foreign minister said it was necessary
to relaunch the peace process on a credible and firm basis, which guaranteed the
restoration of the Palestinians' rights, the establishment of an independent
Palestinian state and Israel's withdrawal from all Arab lands occupied since
June 1967, including the Syrian Golan Heights and the Shebaa Farms. <<< Full
