MEXICO CITY, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Mexico's President Vicente Fox and president-elect Felipe Calderon on Wednesday promised an orderly handover of power.

Fox told the press after their meeting at the presidential palace that he was committed to ensuring that the presidency was handed over in a "highly professional way" on Dec. 1.

The meeting between Fox and Calderon, both from the ruling National Action Party, came a day after Mexico's top electoral court declared Calderon the winner of the July 2 election.

Calderon, who served as energy minister in Fox's government, said Fox and he had also agreed on a plan for current ministers to put together a report about future challenges for the new government.

Calderon said he was "convinced that the transition will be successful" and that the foundation that Fox had built with his government "will allow Mexicans to move forward much more quickly and with more security and clarity."

Leftist runner-up Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador claimed that the July 2 election was riddled with fraud. His supporters have launched a public campaign to challenge the result which gave victory to Calderon by only 0.56 percentage points. Enditem
