Special report: Israel, Lebanon agree on ceasefire

BEIRUT, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese President Emile Lahoud said Wednesday that Israel's decision to lift its blockade on Lebanon did not ensure Israeli full compliance with a UN resolution.

Israel has not been complying with the UN Security Council Resolution 1701 even if it lifted the blockade because it has been occupying Lebanese lands in the south and violating the territorial waters and the sky of Lebanon, said Lahoud in a statement.

Lahoud's statement came after Israel announced earlier Wednesday that it would lift an eight-week-old air and sea blockade against Lebanon on Thursday and hand over control to international forces.

Shortly after the Israeli announcement, Lebanon formally asked UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to authorize the deployment of German naval ships to monitor the Lebanese coast. French, Italian and Greek naval ships are expected to be deployed until German troops takes over the sea patrols. Israel imposed blockade and launched massive military offensive against Lebanon after Lebanese Hezbollah guerillas kidnapped two Israeli soldiers and killed eight others in cross-border attacks on July 12.

Although the 34-day-long fighting between the two sides came to a cease-fire on Aug. 14 thanks to the UN Resolution 1701, Israel has vowed to keep its blockade until UN peacekeepers take control of south Lebanon to guarantee the safety of the Jewish state. Enditem
