Special report: Tension escalates in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Sept. 6 (Xinhua) -- Three people, including a woman, were shot dead in separate incidents in the restive Diyala province on Wednesday, local police said.

Unknown gunmen opened fire at a female government employee in the Tahrir district in western Baquba, some 65 km northeast of Baghdad, the media office of the provincial police said in a statement.

Separately, two civilians, a barber and the owner of a grocery were shot dead by gunmen in western Baquba, the statement said. Earlier, the media office said in another statement that 10 people were killed and wounded in attacks in several parts of the province.

Baquba is the provincial capital of Iraq's Diyala province, part of the so-called Sunni Triangle, a bastion of sectarian strife and insurgency against the U.S.-led occupation. Enditem
