MEXICO CITY, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Hurricane John has dashed into Mexico's Baja California peninsula, leaving at least three people killed and three others missing, local authorities said on Monday.

Thousands of people in the Baja California peninsula were trapped Sunday by floods triggered by rain-dumping Tropical Storm John, but no death or serious damage has been reported.

The three killed includes one British tourist, who was found drowned on the west coast of Baja California Sur state, and the two others were Mexicans, the state authorities said.

Hurricane John, which has been downgraded to a tropical storm, swept the tourist port city of La Paz late Friday, blacking out the city and flooding the streets over the weekend.

Numerous trees were uprooted and scores of electric power poles flattened during the blast of the storm.

Meanwhile, about 4,000 residents of La Paz were evacuated to shelters.

The storm is now pouring over southern U.S. states, but it poses no serious threat, as the Miami-based U.S. National Hurricane Center said there was "not much left of John." Enditem
