LIMA, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- At least 200 people have fallen ill from Salmonella food poisoning after a party in the southern Amazon district of Inahuaya, in the northern Peruvian region of Loreto, local media reported on Thursday.
Inahuaya residents held the party, at which grilled chicken and beer were served, for the area's patron saint. After the party, many guests developed symptoms of food poisoning, such as vomiting, headaches and high fever.
Salmonella is a type of bacteria which causes food poisoning.
Edilberto Salas, health director in Contamana province, told reporters that there were 113 victims of food poisoning in the local health center, and 26 in the social security building. A further eight, who were rated "extremely serious," have been flown to the nearby region of Ucayali for treatment.
Loreto's Regional Health Directorate has sent medicine to Inahuaya, and the navy has sent patrol boats to visit the villages in the region to find other sick residents and take them to medical centers. Enditem
