Special report: Israel, Lebanon agree on ceasefire

    STOCKHOLM, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- UN Relief Work Coordinator, Norway's Jan Egeland, has strongly criticized Israel's use of cluster bombs in Lebanon, according to reports reaching here from Oslo on Thursday.

    UN experts have so far found 100,000 undetonated cluster bombs in more than 350 spots in Lebanon, Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK) reported.

    Egeland accused Israel of having dropped many of the cluster bombs in the last hours before the ceasefire became effective.

    "Ninety percent of the cluster bombs were dropped over Lebanon during the last hours of the conflict, when we knew there would be a solution," Egeland said to NRK.

    "The bombs have affected large areas of agriculture land and private homes," according to Egeland.

    On Wednesday, NRK reported that the cluster bombs with which the Norwegian defense forces are equipped, are among the 12 worst in the world.

    Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said that the Government had decided that Norway would remove these cluster bombs from its arsenals. Enditem

    AMMAN, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan denounced here on Thursday during a news conference the Israel's use of cluster bombs during the war between Israel and Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas.

    After his talks with Jordan's King Abdullah II, Annan said that "those kinds of weapons should not be used in civilian and populated areas".
