BEIRUT, Aug. 30 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Seniora said on Wednesday that an Israeli blockage on Lebanon would be lifted soon.

"UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan had promised to (promote) the lifting of Israeli blockade on Lebanon and I'm sure it will be removed within days," Seniora told reporters.

He promised that the government would pay some 33,100 U.S. dollars to each family whose house was completely destroyed by Israel.

He said that 130,000 housing units had been demolished or damaged, 50,000 of them in the southern district of Beirut, in more than one month of Israeli airstrikes and ground fighting with Hezbollah guerrillas.

Seniora said that renovation was underway in Lebanese Rafik Hariri International Airport, adding that the eastern runway was completed and the western one was under reconstruction and would be ready within three days.

He stressed that there were no "direct or indirect" contacts with Israel on a peace agreement. "We can't seek any agreement with Israel before a just and comprehensive peace. Lebanon is the last Arab country that could sign a peace agreement with Israel."

Israel imposed blockade and launched a massive military offensive against Lebanon on July 12 after Lebanese Hezbollah guerillas kidnapped two Israeli soldiers and killed eight others in a cross-border attack.

Although the fighting ended on Aug. 14 under UN Security Council Resolution 1701, Israel has vowed to keep its blockade until a UN peacekeeping force takes control of south Lebanon to guarantee the safety of the Jewish state. Enditem
