MEXICO CITY, Aug. 29 (Xinhua) -- Tropical storm John became a category one hurricane on Tuesday, and was now threatening a wide area of Mexico's Pacific coast, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) said.
A statement from the SMN said the areas at risk stretched from Chacagua, in the southern state of Oaxaca, to Manzanillo, in the southeastern state of Colima, including the country's largest Pacific resort, Acapulco in the state of Guerrero.
"Precautions are needed for maritime navigation close to the hurricane and the general population must follow the Civil Protection Service guidelines," said the SMN.
They added that the eye of the hurricane was 230 km south-southeast of Acapulco and was moving west-northwest at 15 km per hour.
Hurricane John, the sixth to be named this hurricane season, could move into category two within hours with winds from 155 km per hour to 195 km per hour, the SMN added. Enditem
