SEOUL, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- South Korean National
Olympic Committee said Monday that Republic of Korea (ROK) and the
Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) will discuss to form unified teams
for future sports events early next week in Lausanne, Switzerland.
"Thanks to some mediation by Jacques Rogge, president
of the International Olympic Committee(IOC), I will go to Lausanne to meet Rogge
and Mun Jae-duk (the president DPEK's Olympic Committee) next Tuesday," said Kim
Jung-kil, the president of South Korean Olympic committee.
According to Kim, Rogge will meet Mun and Kim
separately next week. "The IOC also told us that DPRK has reacted positively to
the offer," Kim said.
"If we succeed in narrowing the discrepancies between
them, we will try to conclude the matter in a three-way meeting with Mun and
Rogge," Kim added.
The two Koreas agreed in principle to form a single
team for the Doha Asian Games in December 2006 and the Beijing Olympics in 2008
earlier. However, the two sides failed to reach further agreement in the past
two rounds of bilateral talks due to differences over how to select athletes.
According to Yonhap, during the two rounds of talks, the DPRK had insisted any
single team should include equal numbers of athletes from both sides while the
South Korea demanded the squad should be selected on the basis of merit.
Rogge sent a letter to South Korean President Roh
Moo-hyun and DPRK top leader Kim Jong-il in June to call on cooperation between
the two Koreas on forming a single team. Enditem
