Special report: Iran launches five-week military
exercise
Iran tests ground-to-sea missile
BEIJING, Aug. 24 --
Iran has fired a series of missiles as part of a large-scale military maneuvers
aimed at introducing its new defensive doctrine. The current round of war games
began on Saturday.
Exercises will be held in 14 of the country's 30 provinces
and could last as long as five weeks. Colonel Ghor-ban-za-deh said Iran's
infantry force wants to prove that it can tackle threats on the seashore.
The military exercise, involving 12 regiments, is
codenamed "The Blow of Zolfaghar". That's in reference to a sword belonging to
Imam Ali, one of the most revered figures for Shiite Muslims. A majority of
Iran's 70 million people are Shiite.
