Barcelona, the national and European champions, crushed Super Cup rivals
Espanyol with a 3-0 Sunday victory to win their first trophy of the new season.
Portuguese forward Anderson Luis de Souza, better
known as Deco, scored twice, and home-grown Xavi with one goal, gave Frank
Rijkaard's side a 4-0 aggregate victory over Espanyol, who are winners of the
King's Cup; their seventh Super Cup win.
Barcelona travel to Monaco on Friday and could win
another trophy there, when they play UEFA Cup winners Sevilla in the final of
the European Super Cup.
"It was the perfect way to start the season," Deco
told reporters after the game. "It was great to score four goals and win without
having to suffer too much."
Sunday's match was completely controlled by Barcelona
from the start, with Brazilian star Ronaldo de Assis (Ronaldinho), teaming with
Xavi to coordinate play from mid-field.
Xavi scored after only three minutes, from a corner,
heading a ball fed to him by Ronaldinho, who had beaten Espanyol full-back
Sergio Sanchez with a step-over.
Deco scored for the first time in minute 12, receiving a cross from full back Juliano Belleti, shooting past goalkeeper Kameni. Deco added a third with an overhead kick after another great cross from Belletti. Enditem
