SANTIAGO, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Around 5,000 Chileans took part in a rally in central Santiago on Sunday to demand reforms of the electoral law, labor law, education and the pension system.

The rally, which was called by the Unified Workers Organization (CUT), called for an end of institutions inherited from Chile's 1973-1990 military dictatorship, and a reform of the binomial electoral system.

Demonstrators said that the current electoral system privileges the two largest parties in the nation, and excludes smaller groups from political participation, creating an unrepresentative legislature.

Guillermo Teller, leader of the Communist Party of Chile, believed the rally was positive, while organizers stressed the important symbolism of the gathering, which took place in Caupolican Theatre, scene of the country's important demonstrations. Enditem
