Special report: Israel, Lebanon agree on ceasefire

JERUSALEM, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- The Israeli army confirmed that its commandos carried out a raid in eastern Lebanon on early Saturday.

The army said that the air-borne operation by special forces was aimed to prevent weapons being transferred to Hezbollah from Iran and Syria.

Earlier, the pan-Arab al-Jazeera satellite channel reported that three Hezbollah guerillas were killed by Israeli commandos in the raid.

Lebanese security sources said that the Israeli army conducted the raid on a Hezbollah stronghold in eastern Lebanon while Hezbollah's al-Manar television reported that Hezbollah fighters clashed with Israeli commandos near the Bodai village in eastern Lebanon.

Some casualties were caused on the Israeli side, according to al-Manar.

There was no immediate comment from the Israeli army on the casualties.

The Israeli raid came as a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah came into effect on Monday under a UN Security Council resolution.

The truce ended the 34-day-long conflict which was triggered by the capture of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah during cross-border raids on July 12. Enditem
