Martina Hingis reached the semifinals of the Montreal Cup WTA hard court
tournament on Friday after beating Svetlana Kuznetsova in straight sets,
according to the tournament's official website.
The seventh-seeded Swiss disposed of the
fourth-seeded Russian 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 to improve her record to 2-1 against
Kuznetsova this season.
Hingis prevailed in the first meeting at Doha in
March, but Kuznetsova bounced back in Miami a month later.
Kuznetsova, the 2004 US Open champion, was the
highest seed remaining in the tournament after top seed Kim Clijsters was forced
to retire with a wrist injury and No. 3 Nadia Petrova was upset Wednesday.
Second seed Maria Sharapova opted out before the
tournament started citing fatigue.
In the semi-finals, Hingis will face another Russian
in Anna Chakvetadze, who ousted Israel's Shahar Peer 7-6 (7-3), 7-5.
In the top half of the draw, ninth-seeded Russian
Dinara Safinawent one step closer to winning her first title of the season as
she crushed Australian Nicole Pratt 6-1, 6-0 in just 48 minutes.
Her next opponent is No. 13 Ana Ivanovic of Serbia
and Montenegro, who advanced with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over No. 14 Katarina
Srebotnik of Slovenia. Enditem
