    Sepcial Report: Tension accelerates in Iraq

    BAGHDAD, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- An American soldier was killed on Wednesday in the volatile Anbar province, the U.S. military said on Thursday.

    The soldier, assigned to the 1st Brigade, 1st Armored Division, died from fatal wounds inflicted by insurgents in fighting in the western Anbar province, the military said in a brief statement.

    The name of the soldier is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, it added.

    More than 2,600 U.S. military personnel have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led war in March 2003, most of them died as a result of hostile action, according to media count. Enditem
