BEIRUT, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese troops are on their way to south Lebanon early on Thursday to deploy near the border with Israel in line with a UN resolution, according to a CNN report.

Trucks, armored troop carriers and jeeps are on the move toward the Litani River, about 30 km from the Israeli border, from several points.

The Lebanese army will be conjunct with UN peacekeepers already in the south and will gradually take over the territory from which Israeli forces are withdrawing.

The move came several hours after Israeli army began handing over positions in south Lebanon to the United Nations as the Lebanese government agreed to deploy troops both south and north of the Litani River.

Under a UN-brokered ceasefire agreement that has been effective since Monday morning, Israel is obliged to hand over its positions in southern Lebanon to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which would then turn them over to the Lebanese army. Enditem
