Israel, Lebanon agree on ceasefire

LONDON, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah guerillas in Lebanon is "fragile," said the United Nations's Deputy Secretary-General Mark Malloch Brown in an interview with the BBC on Wednesday.

"It's a very precarious, fragile situation, with a lot of trigger-happy people. It's very important to get the two sides prized apart," Malloch Brown said.

The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution last Friday, giving a mandate to reinforce the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) from under 2,000 troops to 15,000.

The world body announced on Tuesday it hoped an initial deployment of more than 3,000 troops could be in place in two weeks to help guard the ceasefire.

In the meantime, countries willing to contribute troops to UNIFIL are scheduled to meet on Thursday to discuss rules of engagement of the multinational force. Enditem
