WASHINGTON, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- The United States will not take part in the United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said Tuesday.
"We ourselves are not going to be actually deploying as part" of UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon), McCormack told a news briefing.
He said the United States had experience in the logistics and deployment planning for these kinds of forces, and were part in the planning of the force.
The U.S. government would send a senior interagency team to theUnited Nations Wednesday and Thursday to "help in shaping the new and enhanced UNIFIL," David Welch, assistance secretary of state for Near Eastern Affairs, said at a separate news conference.
The UN Security Council unanimously adopted resolution 1701 last Friday, which called for Israel's withdrawal and authorized an increase of the existing UN force in Lebanon to 15,000 troops to help Lebanese government troops take control of south Lebanon as Israel withdraws.
France, Spain, Italy and some other countries have announced they would participate in the reinforced UNIFIL. Enditem
