Special report: Major UK air terror plot thwarted

    LONDON, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- The threat of a terror attack in Britain remained to be "likely" but not "imminent" on Monday after the alert level was downgraded from critical to severe.

    Police are still questioning the 24 suspects over the terror plot to bring down transatlantic airplanes which was disrupted last Thursday, Sky news reported.

    Heathrow airport, the world's busiest airport which suffered greatly from the foiled plot in order to boost security, was still in chaos with 68 flights canceled on Monday, despite improved punctuality and relaxed hand luggage restrictions.

    The new rules, which allow limited items instead of the utmost necessary ones in the aftermath of the plot, were implemented on Monday at most airports except Heathrow.

    Caution is still exercised by the authorities. A British Airport flight from Heathrow to New York was turned back on Sunday night after an unclaimed mobile phone was found on board.

    Home Secretary John Reid warned the public earlier not to lose their vigilance, saying "there may be other people out there who may be planning an attack against the UK." Enditem
