Special report: Israel, Lebanon agree on ceasefire

JERUSALEM, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Israel's Justice Minister Haim Ramon said Monday that as a result of a 33-day-long confrontation with the Jewish forces, Hezbollah is now a "beaten" force that is entirely changed, Israel Army Radio reported.

"This is a beaten Hezbollah, entirely different in real terms, both on the ground and also from the international standpoint," said Ramon.

He noted that the terms of a UN cease-fire, which was accepted by both Israel and Lebanon, could spur a fundamental change in Lebanon. That was the objective of the war as pursued by Israel, he added.

On Friday, UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution calling for Israel's withdrawal and authorizing an increase of the existing UN force in Lebanon to 15,000 troops to help Lebanese government troops take control of south Lebanon as Israel withdraws.

After 33 days of fighting between Israel and Lebanese Hezbollah, the ceasefire in Lebanon went into effect at 8 a.m. (0500 GMT) Monday. Enditem
