BEIJING, August 14 -- In Canada, African grandmothers
caring for children orphaned by AIDS, Hollywood actors, altruistic youths and
seasoned veterans in the battle against AIDS have all had gathered for a
week-long conference.

They are sharing their research and experiences, and
renewing their commitment to halting the spread of the deadly virus. During the
opening news conference, conference co-chair, Dr. Helene Gayle, spoke of the
main challenges. She said research has already shown how to prevent infection,
and prolong the lives of those already infected.
But the international community needs to translate
knowledge and experience into more accessible programs.
This year marks the 25th year since the first
reported cases of HIV. Since then, nearly 65 million people worldwide have been
infected with HIV. And the disease has killed more than 25 million people.
