MADRID, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish government hailed Saturday the UN Security Council resolution over the bloody conflict in Lebanon, saying the document laid a foundation for a lasting peace in the region.
In a statement, the Spanish Foreign Ministry also called on parties that have an influence in the region to press for the implementation of the resolution and an immediate ceasefire.
The UN Security Council on Friday adopted a resolution to seek a "full cessation" of violence between Israel and Lebanon's Hezbollah after a month of fighting that has killed more than 1,000 people.
The resolution, adopted unanimously, authorizes 15,000 UN peacekeepers to help Lebanese troops take control of southern Lebanon as Israeli forces withdraw from the region.
Spain said it believed that the resolution made it possible for realizing peace and avoiding escalation of the conflict.
It also reiterated the commitment to humanitarian and reconstruction assistance to Lebanon. Enditem
