Special report: Major UK air terror plot thwarted

MADRID, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish Airports and Air Traffic Authority announced Friday that 93 percent of the 618 flights to and from Britain had flown as normal by 7 p.m. (1800 GMT) in the day.

Spain canceled most of the flights to London on Thursday as British police thwarted a terrorist plot that sought to blow up 10 U.S.-bound commercial planes in mid-air.

British police arrested 24 suspects at London's Heathrow Airport Thursday and one person was released later.

After the foiled plot, many countries around the world raised their alert level and tightened security and checks at airports.

Despite Friday's improvement, the Spanish authorities still advised passengers planning to fly to Britain to call the airport beforehand to check their flights. Enditem
