Israel–Hezbollah conflict continues
BEIJING, Aug. 11 -- Israeli airstrikes continue to bombard Lebanon, and at the same time, Hezbollah fired more than a hundred rockets into mortherm Israel, with one landing in the coastal city of haifa.
On Thursday, rockets hit Tyre, the Bekaa valley, and several border villages. Neither has there been any let-up.
In the southern Lebanese village of Kfar Tibnit, security officials say one man was killed, and his wife wounded, when an Israeli shell hit their house.
Israeli shells also targeted several villages around the market town of Nabatiyeh. In Kfar Rumman, nearly fifty shells fell within ten minutes, killing one and wounding nine.
Meanwhile, Israeli warplanes showered leaflets over downtown Beirut ... warning of a "painful and strong" response to Hezbollah attacks, and advising residents to evacuate three southern suburbs.
More leaflets dropped in northern Lebanon warned that Israel may target any traffic found moving along a key highway to Syria.
Israeli Vice Premier, Shimon Peres, said on Thursday that his country will honor a UN resolution calling for a ceasefire ... as long as southern Lebanon is controlled by an international force as well as the Lebanese army.
"The United Nation's resolutions will be honored, mainly the southern part of Lebanon will be manned by the Lebanese army not by the Hezbollah."
But Israel has also warned that should diplomatic efforts fail, the fight against Hezbollah could grow wider and more severe.
Also on Thursday, Hezbollah fired rockets into the Israeli village of Deir al Assad, killing two people and wounding two others. And rockets also fell in the Haifa suburb of Kiryat Yam. But no injuries have been reported so far.
A statement from Hezbollah says it killed fourteen and wounded six Israeli soldiers on Thursday. They also claim to have damaged twenty Israeli tanks on the same day.
