Pipeline blasted in southwestern Pakistan
www.chinaview.cn 2006-08-08 16:41:06

ISLAMABAD, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Unknown persons in southwestern Pakistan's Baluchistan Tuesday blasted a 18-inch diameter pipeline supplying gas to port city Karachi, causing suspension of gas supply in parts of the city, local TV channel reported.

Improvised explosive device planted by unidentified personnel by the side of a pipeline at Gopat, a place near Sui, a border town close to eastern province Punjab and southern Province Sindh, severely damaged the pipeline and caused suspension of gas supply to some localities of Karachi, the GEO TV reported.

The explosion came just days after a pipeline near Sui supplying gas to the neighboring province Punjab was blasted on Saturday.

Concerned officials have reached the scene of incident, however, the repair work of the damaged pipeline could not be started thus far, said the GEO report.

Government installations, gas pipelines and electricity lines in Baluchistan easily become targets of attacks launched by local anti-government tribesmen, who want to gain more political rights from the administration and control over local energy resources. Enditem
