bombs kill 40 Lebanese civilians
BEIJING, August 5-- The Israeli military has
continued its offensive in southern Lebanon, with bombs killing at least 40
civilians, as the conflict entered its 25th day. Alistair Shewring has the
details.
Friday saw another day of violence, with more
civilians than combatants being killed. Security sources said one Israeli air
strike killed 33 farm workers loading fruit onto trucks and wounded another 20
near the Syrian border. Israeli planes also destroyed four bridges on the main
coastal highway north of Beirut. The bombardment of a house in the frontline
Taibeh village in south Lebanon killed seven civilians and wounded ten. Israeli
jets also hit the coastal area south of Tyre in a camp for refugees, injuring
one civilian.
Israeli Defence Minister Amir Peretz said the
operation will continue until Hezbollah no longer threatens northern Israel.

Israeli defence minister Amir Peretz said:"The
fighting is proceeding according to plan. We have just completed a very
important stage with the taking over of one of the most difficult areas and we
intend to continue and complete the whole mission. Don't let Hezbollah delude
itself we have no intention of giving up."
Meanwhile, the Israeli army on Friday distributed
footage showing soldiers walking inside a southern Lebanese village, searching
houses for Hezbollah fighters and taking over buildings.
Israel began its attack on Lebanon on July 12th, when
Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers and killed eight more. So far, more than
700 people in Lebanon and over 70 Israelis have been killed in the conflict.

Lebanese president condemns Israeli airstrikes on road,
bridges
BEIRUT, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) --
Lebanese President Emile Lahoud on Friday condemned Israeli airstrikes on four
bridges in north Beirut, local media reported.
After Hezbollah rocket attack killed several Israelis
on Friday, Israel expanded its bombing of Lebanon with airstrikes targeting
bridges in north Beirut, killing three people and injuring several others as
well as destroying four bridges.
Lahoud said in a statement that the Israeli intense
airstrikes on Lebanon's bridges and roads were aimed at tightening the blockade
on the Lebanese, cutting communications between them and starving them. Full story <<<
