BEIJING, Aug. 4 -- Israel's Defense Minister, Amir Peretz, has ordered troops to ready themselves for an offensive that will push control into Lebanon as far as the Litani River.     Israel renewed airstrikes against suspected Hezbollah targets in the battered southern Lebanese city of Tyre on Thursday. There were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries.

Overnight Wednesday to Thursday morning, Israeli aircraft launched strikes on 70 targets in southern Lebanon and Beirut. Several facilities, including a petrol station, were destroyed.

Hizbollah fired 70 rockets into Israel on Thursday, after showering a record 231 missiles the day before.

Israeli jets bombed Hizbollah dominated suburbs of Beirut for the first time in days.

Israel is expanding the ground war in southern Lebanon, where up to 10 ,000 troops were fighting Hezbollah.

One Israeli soldier was killed and four were wounded on Wednesday. The death brings to 37 the number of Israeli soldiers killed in more than 3 weeks of fighting.

It is believed that one third of the casualties in the conflict were children under 12, and one million or a quarter of the population in Lebanon have been displaced.
