WASHINGTON, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. Defense
Department announced Wednesday that it would send about 11,000 soldiers to
Afghanistan.
The soldiers, from the headquarters and a brigade of
the 82nd Airborne Division based in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and other units,
would be deployed to Afghanistan late this year as part of the next rotation of
forces, the department said in a statement.
The rotation continued the U.S. commitment to
Afghanistan, yet it was flexible and adaptable in order to meet the evolving
requirements for the mission, the statement said.
Currently there were about 22,000 U.S. soldiers in
Afghanistan.
The Pentagon said late last year that it would reduce
U.S. troop levels in Afghanistan by 3,000 this year. Enditem
