BEIJING, August 1-- Some 200 Lebanese, mostly elderly and weak, have limped to safety, after weeks of being trapped by ground fighting between Israeli troops and Hezbollah fighters in the southern Lebanese town of Bint Jbail.
Most of the people had to walk as the roads in the
area have been destroyed. Some made all the way to the nearest hospital - in
Tibnin, eight kilometers north - but two died on the way. Aid groups scrambled
to get humanitarian supplies into Lebanon's embattled south on Monday, taking
advantage of Israel's decision to halt air-strikes for forty-eight hours.
The violence in the area has cut a swath of destruction
right through the center of Bint Jbail, from where Israeli soldiers withdrew two
days ago after heavy resistance from guerrillas. Thousands of Lebanese are
believed to be still trapped in villages across the south, unable to leave
because they are too old, sick or poor for the journey. An estimated three
quarters of a million Lebanese have been driven out of their homes by the
fighting.
